madrid - Prominent detained separatists from Catalonia, including ex-vice premier of the Oriol Junqueras region, recognize the Spanish authority in Catalonia on closer inspection. In a request for release they have promised the court to respect the Spanish constitution.
They write in a letter to accept that Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution is applied in Catalonia and thus recognize the current Spanish authority in the region. Madrid suspended the autonomy of the region by invoking that article. New regional elections are on 21 December.
The moderate attitude follows a month of radical and unlawful attempts by the separatists to break Catalonia from Spain. Not only did they fight the Spanish government, but also many Catalans and companies in the armor.
