brussels (afn/belga) - At Belgian sites of the French supermarket chain Carrefour, a maximum of 1233 jobs disappear.

As a result of a reorganization, 1053 jobs are on the way to the supermarkets and another 180 at the head office in Evere, Brussels.

The group wants to close two large loss-making supermarkets in Genk and Liège, was announced at a meeting of the works council in Brussels. Carrefour has around 800 branches in Belgium, the lion's share of which is operated by self-employed people. 11,500 people work there.

Earlier, the company already announced that 2400 jobs were being scrapped at its headquarters in France. Business units are also being divested and mega-supermarkets are being reduced. The measures must result in an annual saving of 2 billion euros in 2020.

Carrefour sighs under intense competition in the French supermarket sector.
