Canada prohibits discrimination against transgenders

World May 17, 2016 20:45

- The Canadian government on Tuesday introduced a bill to protect transgender people against discrimination. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that all Canadians have the right to live a life without stigma and persecution.

With the bill, the government wants to expand an existing law to also prohibit discrimination based on gender identity that way. In addition to extending the prohibition of discrimination gender identity can now also give rise to a so-called hate crime. If a crime is committed because of a person's gender identity, a judge must now weigh aggravating circumstance.

As the ruling party has a majority in parliament, the bill will be adopted almost certain.

The bill is in stark contrast with the situation in Canada's southern neighbor. In various states of the United States oppose conservatives against protection for transgender people. North Carolina Republicans have passed a law which requires transgender people to use the toilet then join the sex on their birth certificate.
