washington - A few days before the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States, hackers had taken control of a large part of the security cameras in Washington.

Two Romanians are being prosecuted for cybercrime and fraud in the US. They probably belong to a hacker group that is guilty of extortion. Three more Romanians are being persecuted in London.

On 12 January, the police discovered that a number of security cameras were no longer functioning properly. According to the Washington Post, it involved more than three hundred cameras. Hackers had taken over control through ransomware and demanded ransom.

That has never been paid. The cameras were taken offline and provided with software again. This meant that the cameras could no longer record images until 15 January. The inauguration was five days later.

The suspects, arrested in Romania this month, can be sentenced to 20 years in prison. They still have to be delivered.
