brussels - Calling from the Netherlands to another EU country may not cost more than 19 cents a minute, an SMS no more than 6 cents. The Member States, the European Commission and the European Parliament reached a political agreement in Brussels on Wednesday morning after months of negotiations. The maximum rates must apply to all foreign calls and SMSes within the 28 member states.
The step follows the abolition of the roaming costs in June last year. The agreement has yet to be formally finalized. Thereafter, Member States have two years to implement the legislation nationally.
The telecom deal must also provide investments in optical fiber broadband and sufficient radio spectrum for the 5G networks of the future. EU Commissioner Mariya Gabriel (digital economy): 'These new rules are essential for Europe's digital future. They lead to better services for the consumer and to very fast networks. '
