Call to label fishing nets

World July 9, 2018 10:42

rome - World Animal Protection wants all fishnets to be provided with a personal label in 2025. The international animal protection organization calls on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations at the start of an international meeting in Rome to make the labeling of fishing nets compulsory in the fight against the massive death of animals through the nets.

According to the organization, fishermen are encouraged in this way not to leave fishing nets in the sea and to recover lost nets. Serious offenders can also be identified by the labels and possibly penalized. At present, an owner of fishing equipment can not be identified.

Every year, according to World Animal Protection, more than one hundred thousand sea turtles, whales, seals and dolphins are killed by ghost fishing gear, lost in the sea or dumped fishing nets.

'The situation is critical. The amount of haunted fishing gear in the sea has risen in recent years and will continue to increase if nothing is done, 'says Ingrid Giskes, head of the Sea Change campaign.
