Brussels starts investigation into Polish laws

brussels - The European Commission opened an inquiry to investigate the recently adopted laws in Poland. That made vice chairman Frans Timmermans said Wednesday after debate by the whole committee.


         Brussels starts proceedings because there are concerns that the new laws undermine the rule of law and democracy in Poland. Timmermans stressed that investigations are opened to get the facts on the table.
Poland, where in the autumn a new Eurosceptic government took office, took recent laws that curb the power and independence of the Constitutional Court. In addition, the public broadcaster under tighter political control come to be. This much against the wishes of Brussels.
