British government suffers Brexit defeat

london - The government of British Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered a sensitive defeat in the Upper House. That House of Lords decided that the parliament has the final say on the conditions under which the United Kingdom departs from the European Union.

The lords voted 335 to 244 votes for an amendment that gives the parliament more powers. For example, parliamentarians can send the government back to the negotiating table if they are not satisfied with the agreement with Brussels. They can also prevent their country from leaving the EU without a deal.

Martin Callanan, who represented the government, tried unsuccessfully to change the lords. 'What this amendment does is weaken the UK's negotiating position,' the minister concluded. He pointed out that Parliament could order the government to 'stay in the EU indefinitely'.

The decision can still be reversed in the House of Commons. The conservative government is formally supported there by a narrow majority of parliamentarians.

The government had already promised to submit the negotiation result to the parliament about the Brexit, but presented this as a choice between agreeing to the agreement or leaving no deal out of the EU. The amendment goes further and forces the government to follow the instructions of the parliament if the agreement on the Brexit is rejected.
