Berlin police are running tens of thousands of cases

berlin - The Berlin investigation has not been able to investigate more than 55,000 cases last year due to a shortage of people and equipment. The figure is from the LKA (Landeskriminalamt) that must fight serious crime.

German media reported Tuesday that departments of the detective in the German capital seem paralyzed by the overload. If a track is not investigated for over a month, the detectives must record that the investigation has stalled. In the past year, the Berlin police recorded more than 128,000 times that an investigation has stalled and that is 47,000 times more than in 2016.

The main reason given is lack of staff. Just like in the Netherlands, the German police are struggling with shortages of people and equipment. But according to Benjamin Jendro of the German police union, this shortage of personnel is not only due to insufficient recruitment of police officers. Jendro states that the police are also losing more and more people to the fight against terrorism and cybercrime.

This is good news for the 'traditional' criminals. For example, the LKA department, which is responsible in Berlin for combating drug criminals and organized crime, registered more than 20,000 times last year that research was shut down for more than a month. In 2016, the same department did 3671 times.
