ranchi - An employee of the organization of Mother Teresa is suspected of having sold a newborn child. 'We have discovered that some other babies have also been sold illegally from the center,' said a police officer against the BBC.

The arrested employee worked for the organization Missionaries of Charity, which was founded by Mother Teresa, who died in 1997. The police came into action after a committee for child welfare, CWC, had sounded an alarm.

The CWC chairman says that the newborn child would be sold for 120,000 rupees (over 1,400 euros) to a couple from Uttar Pradesh. The buyers thought that the money was meant for hospital costs. The committee has now taken away thirteen pregnant women from a center of the missionaries in Ranchi.

Couples who want to adopt a child in India have to take into account hefty waiting lists. That is why people with a desire to have children sometimes resort to illegal adoption. The police have now also arrested two other staff members from the center in Jharkhand. They are being challenged about other possible matters.
