Austria elect president

World May 22, 2016 06:06

- Austrian voters go Sunday for the second and decisive round of polling to determine who will be president. The choice is between Norbert Hofer of the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria and Alexander van der Bellen of the Greens.

The 45-year-old populist Hofer seems to have the best chance. He won the first round in all states, with the exception of Vienna. The 72-year-old Van der Bellen did in the first round in the cities, but otherwise not. Hofer's trump card in the campaign has been unwavering, negative opinion about refugees and Muslims. Van der Bellen mainly aims at developing education and the labor market.

The Federal President has mainly a ceremonial post, but has the power to dismiss the government. Austria has since a few days a new chancellor, Christian Kern (50) of the Social Democratic SPÖ.

Alexander van der Bellens ancestors drew three centuries ago from the Netherlands to Russia after the revolution there to Austria in 1917.
