Armenia deletes peace agreement with Turkey

World March 1, 2018 15:03

jerevan - Armenia has denounced an unaccompanied agreement with Turkey on the normalization of relations. According to a spokesman from Armenian President Serzj Sarkisian, the goal of the agreement has not been reached.

In 2009, the two countries reached an agreement for the reopening of borders and for better mutual understanding. However, the agreement has never been ratified in the parliament.

Armenia and Turkey have been battling for a long time about the genocide committed against the Armenian minority in the aftermath of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1922). The Turkish Republic has always vehemently denied that the Armenians were systematically and premeditatedly slaughtered. In general it is assumed that this was the case and that therefore most Armenians in the empire were killed from April 1915 in a few years.
