framingham - Apple and Xiaomi have unleashed Fitbit as the market leader in portable gadgets (wearables). Figures from IDC show that Apple has especially benefited from the slip-off of Fitbit.
Chinese Xiaomi is market leader with 14.7 percent, but it lost 3.2 percentage points of market share in the past year. Apple, due to the launch of the 2nd generation Apple Watch, continued to grow and went from 10.5 to 14.6 percent. For Fitbit it was a difficult year. The company is in a transition of fitness bands to smart watches and other products. That transition cost the company 10.9 percentage points of market share. With a remaining share of 12.3 percent, Fitbit is still significantly larger than number four Samsung. The South Koreans have to do it with 5.5 percent of the pie.
What is more noticeable is the fact that more smaller players have entered the wearable market. Over a year, 17.9 percent more wearables were sold. In total, 24.7 million devices were over the counter in the first quarter.
