new york - The American writer Philip Roth died on Tuesday at the age of 85. This reports The New York Times.

Roth was considered one of the greatest American writers and won numerous literary prizes, including a Pulitzer in 1997 and the Man Booker International Prize (2011). He was also a big contender for the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Roth wrote a lot about the Jewish identity and political culture in the United States. Some of his best known books are Portnoy's Complaint (1969), American Pastoral (1997) and The Plot Against America (2004).
