Also fine Dutch in Antwerp environmental zone

antwerp - Dutch people who drive into the environmental zone of Antwerp with an older car will receive a fine on the mat from next spring. Because Flanders had no treaty with the Netherlands about the exchange of personal data, fines could not be sent automatically, but a legal solution was found. The technical development is still being worked on.

Since last March, owners of older diesel and petrol cars have been fined 125 euros when they enter the so-called low-emission zone. This applies in a large part of Antwerp. The license plate data of the Dutch cars that were in violation were saved.

The fines will be sent in the spring, also to French offenders, according to alderman of Environment Nabilla Ait Daoud. How many there are still to be pulled out of the system, says her spokesperson.

Every day about 3000 Dutch cars are registered in Antwerp, about 4 percent of the total. Of all cars that entered the environmental zone last November, about 1 percent was in violation. That was 5 percent in March.
