An expedition from nature conservationists and the Galápagos Park Authority discovered a female of the Chelonoidis phantastica, a subspecies of the galapagos giant tortoise, on Tuesday evening (local time). The animal, also known as Fernandina giant tortoise, was last observed in 1906. Because there were no clear signs of life afterwards, it was feared that the animal had died out. Scientists assumed that the turtle had disappeared as a result of volcanic eruptions.
