tehran - The former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered as a candidate for the presidential elections in May, according to state media in Iran Wednesday. With his ambitions, Ahmadinejad seems to be heading for a confrontation with the supreme leader ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Spiritual leader Khamenei showed last summer that he sees nothing in a new term for Ahmadinejad. The conservative Ahmadinejad had already last April hinted that he wants to keep the current president Hassan Rohani like a second government term. Ahmadinejad was the predecessor of Rohani. He was president for eight years.
Candidates can register this week as presidential candidate.
