kinshasa - United Nations researchers found 17 new mass graves in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That says Al Jazeera. They were discovered in an area where soldiers of the government army fought with a rebellious militia.

According to Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, a high UN human rights officer, there are certainly 74 people, including thirty children, killed by the government army. Zeid said the soldiers digged the tombs after the militias battle in March in the central region of Kasia. In another incident in Kananga, the capital of the province of Lulua, the soldiers would certainly have shot forty people and raped women and girls.

Zeid immediately requested the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to investigate the matter. If that does not happen, he will present the case to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

In total, the UN has discovered 40 mass graves in the Democratic Republic of Congo since August last year. More than 400 people have been killed.
