AfD benefits from asylum quarrel in Germany

World July 8, 2018 06:24

berlin - The coalition in Germany about the asylum policy has cost the government parties a lot of money. Especially the right-wing populist AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) benefits from the asylum dispute electorally, according to a poll by Bild am Sonntag.

AfD rises by three percentage points in the polls and has 17 percent of the voters behind them. The highest score for the AfD until now, which for the first time would be as large as the SPD (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands). The government party provides two percentage points in the poll.

The Christian Democratic sister parties CDU and CSU also do this, which together with the SPD form the coalition. They reach 30 percent. With 47 percent for the so-called 'Grand Coalition' of Chancellor Angela Merkel, the government parties lose the majority in parliament if there were elections now.
