Advances in Cyprus concert

geneva - The consultations leading to the unification of Cyprus, showing 'encouraging progress.' A quick solution to the many obstacles should not be expected yet.

Guterres Secretary-General of the United Nations continued Thursday on the cautious side with his analysis of the consultations in Geneva under the auspices of the UN. The committee brings together representatives of the Turkish and Greek Cypriots, ministers of Turkey and Greece, diplomats from the former colonial ruler Britain and the UN people.

Guterres expressed confidence and his desire is that Cyprus is a symbol of hope in 2017. The island is divided in 1974 when Turkish troops occupied the northern part. Since then, there is a clear and border crossing through Cyprus, which was just fourteen years was independent.

Cyprus- and then it goes actually to the Greek part- is a member of the European Union since 2004. The country has 1.2 million inhabitants. Nearly 70 percent of the population is of Greek descent.
