Action against pesticides from outside the EU

amsterdam - Food watchdog food watch calls on supermarkets to come up with a solution for pesticides on vegetables and fruits from outside the EU. These are pesticides that are banned in Europe because they are bad for consumers.

'It concerns, for example, pineapples from Costa Rica, beans from Kenya or tomatoes from Morocco. The substances are forbidden for farmers in the EU because they can be carcinogenic or hormone disrupting, for example. 'There are standards for what is allowed on the vegetables and fruit, but according to the food watchdog they offer too few guarantees.

'Because the EU can not make demands on the use of pesticides outside the EU, it is complicated to legislate against European consumers,' says foodwatch.

Foodwatch therefore calls on supermarkets to arrange with their suppliers from outside the EU that they no longer use these resources. According to the organization, this only has advantages: it is better for consumers and producers (who no longer have to work with the resources) and the farmers within the EU get a more equal competitive position.
