tehran - Approximately 580 women stand as candidates in parliamentary elections in Iran on 26 February. That is twice as much as four years ago and a new record for the country, said a spokesman for the Interior Ministry in Tehran Tuesday.

Especially the reformists, who support President Hassan Ruhani, like this year more women as candidates. Ruhani also advocates a greater proportion of women in parliament.,, How can anyone in this country talk about development and progress, but ignore the 50 percent of women in the population? '' The president said.

The reformers in the country compete against the conservatives and hard-liners, which the parliament strongly dominated the last three parliamentary terms.
