- There are 1200 German soldiers needed to support the international coalition against Islamic State conducting air strikes on targets in Syria and Iraq of the terrorist movement. That is the supreme leader of the army, General Volker Wieker, told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

The soldiers are not deployed in combat situations, but are necessary for the security of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and refueling of fighter planes. Chancellor Angela Merkel has promised to support the coalition better after the terrorist attacks in Paris two weeks ago.

According Wieker it may be that a German frigate is necessary to protect the French aircraft carrier. He said he hoped that before the end of the year, the green light comes to the deployment of additional troops. Parliament must give its opinion on that.
