Germany is pulling out a billion for Syria

Germany donates one billion euros for aid to the ailing population in Syria and Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.

The minister came with the announcement when he arrived in Brussels where he attends a conference on aid to Syria. In the second half of this year another 300 million can be added. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris would donate 50 million euros in humanitarian aid for Syria.

Approximately eighty countries take part in the conference. At the same meeting last year, Germany was the biggest donor. The country has donated 4.5 billion euros in aid money since the beginning of the civil war in Syria in 2012. 'Our most important priority is the protection of the civilian population,' says Maas.

According to the United Nations, 13 million Syrians urgently need help because of the war in the country.
