EU countries promise more money for African funds

The EU Member States have pledged to deposit 'sufficient' funds in the African Fund as soon as possible.

The Africa Fund established in November 2015 was an idea of Chancellor Angela Merkel. It now contains 3.1 billion euros, largely from the European Commission. The Member States have not yet transferred more than 175 million euros. That's more than 50 million less than promised. The Netherlands supplies a relatively large contribution by about 15 million euros.

'Clearly not enough,' said European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. According to Tusk, it is very important to help Italy reduce the refugee flow from Libya.
