Belgian nuclear reactor unexpectedly shut down

One of the four reactors of the Doel nuclear power plant, just across the border at Antwerp, was shut down on Monday morning.

It happens more often that reactors in Doel or Tihange, the other nuclear power plant in Belgium, are shut down without prior notice. There is a lot of security concern in neighboring countries.

Some 250 people in Belgium, including Dutch nationals, filed complaints against the Belgian state, the operator and the Belgian nuclear watchdog FANC on Saturday. Action groups from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany want to achieve with their action that the 'rickety' nuclear reactors that they believe are closed. For this purpose, they introduced, among other things, the large number of breakdowns and shut-downs.

The Belgian government has agreed that the plants will close by 2025 at the latest.
