'More than twenty F-35s destroyed,' proudly announced Iranian state media after an airstrike last week on an Israeli airbase. Satellite images showed numerous craters, but damage was limited to bricks and asphalt, with minimal impact on the expensive fighter jets themselves.
However, Israel has suffered significant losses. In recent skirmishes in Lebanon, nine IDF soldiers lost their lives, casting a shadow over the offensive against Hezbollah. Since the massacre of October 7 last year, Israel has lost around seven hundred soldiers, with the total number of casualties, including civilians, exceeding 1700.
How does the country stand militarily and strategically at this point? Experts cited in The New York Times report that Israel's operation in Gaza has indeed been successful. High-ranking American officials told the newspaper that Hamas has taken a significant blow. Israel's military operation has inflicted much more damage on Hamas than initially predicted when the war started in October. The impact has allowed Israeli troops to move freely in Gaza, cutting off weapons supply routes and neutralizing around 14,000 Hamas terrorists.
Israel's battle against Hamas is likened to the West's efforts against the Taliban, according to Middle East expert Erwin van Veen. Although Hamas has suffered a blow, it is not yet defeated, cautioning against premature declarations of victory.
Israel has turned its focus to a more formidable enemy, the pro-Iranian terrorist organization Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite Hezbollah's reputation as a well-armed entity, recent events have weakened its position, including targeted assassinations of leaders and destruction of a portion of their resources.
Hezbollah remains a force to be reckoned with, supported by Iran, a regional powerhouse with a much larger population and military capacity. While Israel lacks in sheer numbers compared to Iran, it maintains superiority in certain areas such as air power, tanks, and military spending. Financial support from the US further reinforces Israel's military capabilities.
Although tactically successful, Israel faces challenges on the geopolitical front. Rulings against the Israeli occupation, looming genocide charges, and uncertainties regarding Gaza's future governance present complex obstacles. The region's sentiments still skew towards anti-Israel sentiment, delaying prospects for Palestinian statehood.
Van Veen concludes, "On all these fronts, the outlook is grim. Improvement seems distant, and the road ahead appears tumultuous before any semblance of progress can be achieved."
