athens, greece - Greek authorities declare a state of emergency on Amorgos following persistent earthquakes, joining Santorini in emergency status.

State of Emergency on Amorgos

Greek authorities have declared a state of emergency on the second island of Amorgos due to continuous earthquakes. Earlier, the state of emergency was also declared on the popular holiday island of Santorini, from where most of the approximately 16,000 residents have evacuated, with schools closed.

Amorgos, with fewer than 2,000 residents, is considered to face lower risks from the earthquakes compared to Santorini, as the island is rocky and less densely populated. The region in the Aegean Sea has experienced over 14,000 earthquakes since late January.
