beijing - The number of Chinese couples getting married has significantly decreased, posing challenges for authorities.

Marriage Rates Decline in China

Official figures show a notable decrease in the number of marriages in China, with over 6 million couples registering their marriage last year compared to 7.68 million the previous year, marking a one-fifth decrease.

With a population of 1.4 billion, China is the most populous country after India. Concerns arise as the population shrinks and ages, with an estimated 300 million people expected to retire in the next decade.

Authorities are taking various measures to address the issue, such as instructing educational institutions to promote marriage, love, and families positively.

Experts attribute the reluctance of young Chinese couples to have children to factors like high childcare costs and challenges in the job market for new entrants.
