houston - Drug-addicted rats feast on confiscated drugs at a police station in Houston, Texas, causing panic among officials.

Drug-addicted Rats at Police Station

Approximately 1.2 million pieces of evidence are stacked in the downtown police office and a second location, including hundreds of thousands of kilos of confiscated drugs, such as over 180,000 kilograms of marijuana. Mayor John Whitmire mentioned that 'the rats are the only ones enjoying it' during a press conference on Friday. The animals seem to be addicted.

The issue came to light through a letter received by an unknown number of attorneys last week. These lawyers represent drug suspects in a total of 3,600 open cases. The letter stated that rats had consumed the stored drugs at the downtown police station's storage.

Whether this jeopardizes convictions due to the sudden lack of evidence remains uncertain. The press conference also highlighted that similar problems occur not only in Houston but nationwide in the US. The police department has been battling this persistent issue since the nineties. A direct solution is yet to be found. How the rats manage to access the drugs has not been disclosed.

To address the problem, it has been decided that drugs confiscated before 2015 no longer need to be stored and can be destroyed. Previously, only narcotics from before 2005 were sent to the incinerator. A new function has been established by the court. The prosecutor, in collaboration with law enforcers, must ensure the accelerated destruction of the drugs.
