washington - President Donald Trump signs decree making English the official language, revoking multilingual document requirement.

President Trump's Decree on Official Language

President Donald Trump has signed a decree declaring English as the official language of the United States. This decision revokes a presidential decree from the 1990s that required official documents to be made available in other languages to assist residents with limited English skills.

Under the new decree, agencies are now allowed to determine the extent of assistance provided in other languages, without being obligated to alter their services. While some states have designated an official language, there was previously no official language established at the federal level. English, being the most widely spoken language in the country, is commonly used for official communication, although many agencies also publish documents in Spanish, the second most spoken language.

The White House reports that over 350 languages are spoken in the United States. Trump's decree emphasizes that an official language is intended to promote unity and encourage people to learn English. Shortly after Trump took office in January, the Spanish-language version of the White House website was taken offline.
