Konstantinos Tasulas Elected as the New President of Greece
In the 4th round of voting in the Greek Parliament, Konstantinos Tasulas has been elected as the new president of Greece. Tasulas will take office on March 13th, succeeding President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
The ruling party New Democracy's candidate Konstantinos Tasulas received 160 votes, while the main opposition party PASOK's candidate Tasos Yanichis received 34 votes, SYRIZA's candidate Luka Katseli received 29 votes, and Kostas Kyriakou from the Victory Party received 14 votes. There were 39 abstentions.
Tasulas, who previously served as the parliament speaker three times, had to resign from his position to run for the presidency. He is the first parliament speaker to be elected with the highest parliamentary support.
In Greece, the president is elected by the parliament for a 5-year term. A candidate needs to secure at least 200 votes out of the 300-member parliament in order to be elected. If this threshold is not met, the election is repeated within 5 days. If the required number of votes is still not reached in the second round, a third round is held with a reduced threshold of 180 votes. If no candidate is elected in the third round, the candidate who receives 151 votes in the fourth round becomes the president.
