baku - Donald Trump winning the U.S. presidential elections is one of the most talked about topics on the first day of the climate summit.

During his previous term as president, Trump withdrew the country from the Paris Climate Agreement, which aimed to limit emissions to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. Whether he will pull out of the agreement again is unclear, but organizations like Greenpeace believe that his presidency will have significant consequences. "But other countries should not be deterred in their climate ambitions by who is in the White House," said Yeb Saño of Greenpeace Southeast Asia on Monday.

This year's COP focuses on setting a new climate financing goal. Climate clubs and developing countries are pushing for the new target to be raised to 1 trillion dollars. With Trump's victory, this seems "unrealistic," according to MEP Mohammed Chahim (GroenLinks/PvdA). He will be involved in the negotiations on behalf of the European Parliament.

"So far, it has mainly been Europe that has adhered to agreements on climate financing." The United States has long been "falling short on financing," and Chahim does not expect that to change now that Donald Trump has won the elections. "If we can double the current climate financing, that would already be a success," Chahim said.
