US Court Orders Return of Deported Man from El Salvador

A US court has ruled that the Trump administration must bring back Kilmar Abrego Garcia, mistakenly deported to El Salvador. The government acknowledged the error but initially refused to repatriate him.

Abrego Garcia, protected from deportation since October 2019, was sent to El Salvador in mid-March along with other alleged gang members. He resides in Maryland with his wife and 5-year-old son.

The court demanded his return by April 7 and questioned the government's legal authority to arrest and detain him. The lawyer admitted the deportation was a mistake but provided no satisfactory explanation for the delay in repatriation.

Trump's administration sent three flights to El Salvador, using a 1798 law for two flights. Legal scrutiny is underway to determine if this violated a court order temporarily blocking deportations under the old law. Abrego Garcia and others on the third flight were deported under different regulations.
