Severe Storms and Tornadoes Hit US
At least forty people have died from severe storms and tornadoes in the US Midwest and South over the weekend. The storms, with thunderstorms, heavy rain, and destructive winds, affected eight states.
- Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama, and Indiana are among the states hit by the severe weather.
- Missouri recorded the highest number of casualties, with twelve fatalities reported.
- In Kansas, eight people died in a chain reaction crash during a sandstorm.
The National Weather Service reported dozens of tornadoes on Friday and Saturday. Some areas in Arkansas showed damage typical of an EF4 tornado, with winds reaching 260 to 320 kilometers per hour.
The strong winds have exacerbated existing wildfires, with hundreds of fires in Oklahoma alone, burning 170,000 hectares. PowerOutage website stated that over 230,000 households were without power in five states.
Further severe thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, hail, and possible tornadoes are expected on the East Coast Sunday night. Thunderstorms may persist in the Northeast on Monday, with conditions improving by Tuesday.
