Melting road demolishes car tires in Australia

A re-paved road in Australia caused a lot of trouble when the weather changed.

Motorists driving unsuspectingly in the north of Queensland, near the Atherton Tablelands plateau, quickly realized that something was not quite right. 'People stopped at the side of the road and could not believe what had happened to their car,' a car driver tells ABC.

Tires were no longer recognizable by the layer of tar that was over them. Some photos show that even the rims are covered with a thick layer of tar that drips off the tires.

Mayor Joe Paronella thinks he knows what exactly happened. Shortly after the road was made, he received phone calls that several cars had been damaged by flying pebbles and gravel. On this it was decided to remove the gravel, which afterwards perhaps was not so convenient given the expected heat. 'I've never seen anything like this,' said the mayor.

Fifty motorists receive compensation. A new set of tires will quickly cost 750 euros in the country.
