France and Gauloises seemed forever linked inextricably linked.

Gauloises existed since the end of the nineteenth century, initially under the name hongroises, as a product of the French state. The traditional blue and red packets with the Gallic helmet it captured along with competitor smoking Gitanes France. In the fifties, smoking Gauloises was a style characteristic of the intellectuals. Especially existentialists like Jean Paul Sartre she had almost permanently dangling in a mouth.

In the nineties, the cigarette maker was in Spanish hands. Later tobacco producer Imperial Brands took over the company. The Gauloises last stronghold in France is a factory in Corsica, which, however, provides only the island of his cigarettes.
