The 19-year-old explained in court that he felt pressured to commit the crime due to owing a significant amount of money. Initially, he attempted to break the store's window with a rock before detonating the grenade at the front door. He stated that he learned how to execute the act from a YouTube tutorial.

No casualties were reported from the explosion. In addition to the prison sentence, the teenager received a permanent ban from entering Denmark. The specifics of his mission, including his financiers and the payment received, remained unclear, with Danish police suggesting a compensation of over three thousand euros.

This case is the first in a series of legal proceedings targeting individuals recruited from Sweden through social media platforms. Danish authorities have arrested fifteen youths in recent months. The next trial is scheduled for November, involving a 16-year-old facing attempted murder charges.

In response to the cross-border gang violence, Danish and Swedish justice ministers unveiled a joint action plan in late August. Emphasis was placed on targeting the leaders of the gang warfare, believed to operate from countries like Turkey and Iran.

The ministers highlighted the use of Swedish youngsters as pawns in a distant gang conflict. They pledged to apply pressure on major tech companies such as Telegram, Meta, and Google, which facilitate the recruitment of youths through their platforms.

While Denmark is relatively new to extreme gang violence, Sweden has experienced a prolonged issue. Over the past five years, 251 people have been fatally shot, with 31 deaths attributed to gun violence this year alone. The ongoing gang warfare, primarily over drug trade and territories, is threatening to spread across the Nordic region, establishing connections with criminal networks in Finland and Norway.

Justice ministers from all Nordic countries will convene in Sweden on Thursday and Friday to address the escalating situation. Tech giants including Google, Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok have been invited to collaborate on combating criminal recruitment via social media platforms.
