Surinamese President Chan Santokhi urged everyone to remain dignified and calm in the wake of Desi Bouterse's passing, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order during the holiday season. Santokhi's words were shared on Christmas Day.

Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk also extended his condolences to Bouterse's family, acknowledging Bouterse's lasting impact on the country. Brunswijk, who previously formed a government with Bouterse's National Democratic Party, expressed his wishes for strength and courage during this time of mourning.
