manila - The death toll in the Philippines from floods caused by the powerful tropical storm Trami has risen to 81.

The southern part of the main island Luzon, where the capital Manila is located, has been severely affected. Many areas are difficult to reach for rescuers. In the city of Naga, the mayor says the water is still knee-deep in the streets. More than 4 million people are believed to have been affected by the storm.

Trami is currently moving towards the South China Sea, west of the Philippines. Authorities warn that the storm could turn and return in the coming days. A new storm is also expected on Sunday, which could develop into a typhoon by Monday.

The Philippines are frequently hit by severe storms. In September, at least twenty people died when the typhoon Yagi passed through, causing hundreds of casualties in Myanmar and Vietnam as well.
