brussels, belgium - NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supports Trump's call for increased defense spending in Europe, stating that the problem lies in Europe, not the US.

Rutte Supports Trump's Call for Increased Defense Spending

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte backs President Trump's push for European allies to increase defense spending, emphasizing the need for Europe to take responsibility for its own defense.

Trump's 5% Goal

President Trump is urging NATO allies to raise their defense spending to 5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up from the current 2% target. Rutte highlights two main issues with defense spending: countries failing to meet the current target and the inadequacy of the 2% goal.

Rutte warns that sticking to the 2% target could leave NATO unable to defend itself collectively within the next 4-5 years.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas also agrees with Trump's call for increased defense spending, stating that Europe must listen to the request and take on its responsibilities.

There is a general consensus within NATO that defense spending should be increased, but the debate lies in determining the exact percentage. While some, like Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, argue that reaching 5% of GDP is not viable, others believe it is necessary for the collective security of the alliance.
