barcelona - Portugal faces potential early elections as Premier Montenegro undergoes confidence vote over alleged conflicts of interest. Socialist Party and Chega to vote against.

Portuguese Premier Facing Confidence Vote

Portugal is heading towards potential early general elections as Premier Luís Montenegro of the Democratic Alliance faces a confidence vote in parliament due to alleged conflicts of interest.

Allegations against Montenegro

  • Accused of breaching exclusivity laws
  • Involved in conflict of interest due to his former company Spinumviva
  • Received income from a casino chain

Parliamentary Support

The Communist Party previously tabled a motion of no confidence, with the Socialist Party pushing for further investigation. Extreme right Chega and center-left Socialist Party are set to vote against Montenegro.

Potential Outcome

If Montenegro loses the vote, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is likely to dissolve parliament, leading to possible early elections on May 11 or May 18.
