berlin - German police have arrested a man from Libya suspected of planning an attack with weapons or explosives on the Israeli embassy in Berlin. The man allegedly has ties to Islamic State.

German police have arrested a man from Libya suspected of planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin. The man, who reportedly traveled to Germany in November 2022 and applied for asylum two months later, had his application rejected in September 2023, but was not deported.

According to Bild, heavily armed agents from a special police unit stormed his residence in Bernau, a small town near Berlin, on Saturday evening. In connection with the case, officers also raided an apartment in the city of Sankt Augustin, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the suspect's uncle reportedly resides. The suspect was allegedly planning to flee abroad through his uncle's house after carrying out the attack, though it remains unclear if the uncle was aware of this plan.

The German public prosecutor's office is currently treating the uncle as a witness, not as an accomplice.

The German authorities took action following a tip from an intelligence agency in another country, Bild reports.
