Carlos Mazón, the regiopresident of Valencia, has issued an apology for the inadequate response of the authorities to the recent floods. Residents of Valencia received a belated warning about the severe weather, with cars being swept away by the torrential rains before the alert was sent. The death toll currently stands at 224, with ongoing search efforts for missing individuals.

Criticism has also been directed at the slow post-disaster reaction. Many affected villages saw locals taking matters into their own hands to clean up the debris as official aid was notably delayed. Mazón's apology was directed towards those who felt that assistance was insufficient or lacking.

Last Saturday, tens of thousands of people in Valencia protested against the regional government's response. Chants of 'murderers' filled the air as images of Mazón and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez were raised in opposition.
