barcelona - The traditional Spanish Christmas lottery, El Gordo, brings families and friends together in hopes of winning big prizes.

When you mention Christmas in Spain, you talk about El Gordo (The Fat One), also known as the Christmas lottery. It is a Spanish Christmas tradition for families, friends, or colleagues to participate in la loteria de Navidad, which has been held every year since 1812.

This year, there is over 2.7 billion euros to be distributed, 112 million more than last year. What makes the Spanish Christmas lottery unique is that it is not one person who wins a million-euro prize, but thousands win the jackpot of around 300,000 euros per 'decimo.'

The lottery is made up of series, each containing one hundred thousand numbers. This year, there are 193 series. These tickets are sold in tenths: 'un decimo.' So, if the jackpot lands on a specific number, for example, 20847, 193 (series) x 10 (decimos) = 1930 people can celebrate and pocket over three hundred thousand euros each.

Participations, or 'partipaciones,' are smaller shares of tenths sold in bars, sports club cafeterias, and other locations for one, two, or five euros, allowing people with less money to join in. For every euro spent, you can potentially win around 15,000 euros if the jackpot number is drawn.

For many, the Christmas lottery is not just about money but also about celebrating good fortune together. It is about the fantasy of sharing happiness. Maria Jose Brun Aznar explains, 'It's fun to buy tickets together. When you have a birthday or want to give someone a gift, you say, I'll give you a decimo. And if you can't afford 20 euros, you give a 'partipacion.'

In previous years, entire communities have experienced the joy of winning big. For instance, residents of the village of Vilalba had a stroke of luck seven years ago, with over 520 million euros being distributed, a fifth of the total prize pool. Criticism has arisen this year regarding the size of the jackpot, which has remained the same for years. However, the allure of El Gordo remains strong.

Despite the critique, many like Jose Antonio Ramoz in Cafe El Lokillo continue to participate in the lottery. For some, winning the jackpot could mean a chance to buy a house and gain independence from financial struggles. The stories of those who have benefited from the lottery winnings are varied and heartwarming, showing the significant impact of luck on people's lives.

Experience with the lottery can change lives, as Maria Jose Brun Aznar discovered when her 92-year-old mother won years ago. Discussing the impact of the win, Maria Jose shares how the money brought relief and care for her mother until her passing, highlighting the positive effects a substantial sum can have on a family's well-being.
