British Scientists Suggest Using Smaller Beer Glasses, Facing Resistance

cambridge - British scientists propose reducing the size of the traditional British 'pint' in order to decrease alcohol consumption in the country.

British imperial pint, the favorite size for ale beers in the UK since the 17th century, is significantly larger at 568 milliliters compared to typical servings in Germany (500 milliliters), the United States (473 milliliters), and France (330 milliliters).

Researchers from the University of Cambridge found that people tend to stick to a specific number of drinks they will have at a pub, rather than the size of the glass. Consequently, beer consumption decreased by 10% after 1,700 participating pubs and restaurants removed the largest size and switched to smaller glasses, with no complaints from customers.

According to the researchers, such a measure could have an impact in the fight against various forms of cancer and other health problems related to excessive drinking.

However, the proposal to eliminate the large beer size is met with protests from the British. Pete Brown, an author of several books about British beer culture, stated, 'Our pubs are already in trouble. Two pubs are closing per day, and now they want to tamper with our pints.'

There is also significant criticism on social media regarding the suggestion. 'If they make a pint smaller, then it's not a pint anymore, right?' one user writes. Another says, 'A smaller pint just means it will take longer to get drunk and forget the horrors of this Labour government.'

For now, Britons need not fear the end of their beloved pint as the government has no plans to scrap the pint as the largest serving. 'I love a pint, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer loves a pint,' said Labour MP Josh Simons to the BBC. 'I will not support any plan to eliminate the pint as the primary measure for drinks because 'a pint equals what it means to drink in a British pub.'
