east flanders, belgium - A caregiver in Belgium's East Flanders city was convicted of abusing a 6-month-old baby in a nursery, receiving a 3-year prison sentence and a €12,512 fine. The nursery where the abuse occurred has been permanently closed.

Baby Abuse Scandal in Nursery Leads to Criminal Conviction

A caregiver in a nursery in East Flanders, Belgium, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison and a €12,512 fine for abusing a 6-month-old baby. The incident came to light when the baby was taken to the emergency room at UZ Gent hospital after showing signs of distress.

Details of the Abuse

Medical examinations revealed that the baby had been diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome. The caregiver initially denied the allegations but later confessed to shaking the baby for at least five seconds. Following the confession, a court ruling sentenced the caregiver to prison with a suspended sentence and ordered payment of compensation to the baby's family.

Nursery Closure and Legal Actions

The nursery where the abuse took place was temporarily closed by its operators for three months and later permanently shut down in 2024. Although the baby did not suffer significant physical damage during the incident, the long-term effects may only be determined when the child reaches adulthood.
