new delhi, india - At least eighteen people died and eleven were injured in a stampede at a train station in New Delhi during a rush to catch trains to the world's largest religious gathering.

Tragedy at New Delhi Train Station

At least eighteen people lost their lives and eleven were injured in a tragic incident at a train station in New Delhi on Saturday. The chaos erupted as a crowd gathered to board trains to the Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering in the world.

Most of the victims likely perished due to lack of oxygen or injuries, stated the medical superintendent of a hospital in New Delhi. The casualties were predominantly women and children.

The Kumbh Mela, which runs until February 26th, attracts tens of millions of Hindus to the northern city of Prayagraj every twelve years and has a history of disasters involving massive crowds. Last month, at least 30 people died in another stampede during a bathing ritual in holy waters.
