buenos aires - An Argentinian judge has ordered the arrest of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega for systematic human rights abuses, including murder and torture.

An Argentinian judge has issued an arrest warrant for Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega due to a systematic violation of human rights, according to a lawyer who filed a case against the leader. The order also applies to several others associated with Ortega's regime, including his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo. The arrest warrant is based on a principle of international law that allows nations to prosecute crimes against humanity outside their country of origin.

The charges were filed in 2022 by a group of Argentinian prosecutors. The crimes allegedly committed by Ortega and his wife include murder, forced disappearances, torture, and deportation of the population.

Ortega, a 79-year-old former guerrilla, has become increasingly authoritarian since coming to power in 2007. His government has silenced critics and cracked down on protests in 2018, resulting in over three hundred deaths according to the United Nations. Most independent media outlets critical of the government now operate from abroad. Hundreds of politicians, journalists, and human rights activists have been stripped of their nationality in the past two years on charges of treason.
