Republicans win Florida governor seat

Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for the governorship of the US state of Florida, has finally resigned to his election defeat.

Gillum, who is mayor of Tallahassee, wanted to be the first black governor of Florida. On election night on 6 November he initially admitted his defeat, but when it turned out that the difference with DeSantis was minimal, he asked for a recount of the votes.

The votes for the Senate seat of Florida are also manually re-counted. This count must be completed by 12.00 PM local time on Sunday.
